Vasiljev's "Zone" is a collection of beautifully photographed
tattooed Russian inmates (both male and female), and per-
fectly complements "Russian Prison Tattoos" by Danzig Bal-
dajev.

He was head of "Colony Number 4" just outside St. Peters-
burg (Russia), where the photographs presented here
were taken, between 1988 and 1992.

Unfortunately, the included explanations of the meanings
of the tattoos are in German language only. "Russian Cri-
minal Tattoo Encyclopedia" should be available by now
(December 2003), and might provide some helpful info for
those who do not read/speak German.

The introduction and the short interview with Sergei Vasil-
jev are also printed in German only.
